In my enviromental science class throughout the semester we've been doing that thing where we go through all of the catastrophic things we've been doing to our planet. So, in an effort to reduce food waste, and to reduce lawn space (and subsequently mowing space) for some reason I was thinking about picking up gardening and growing some produce. We already have a compost holder in the backyard, and actually, another thing that inspired me to try my hand at gardening was when we tossed out our old squash and also a watermelon, and we left them alone to rot, but accidentally ended up growing some pretty nice sized gourds and melons. And that was without any additional imput from anyone in our house! So how hard can it be, really? This page is where I am going to keep track of my composting and gardening adventures and hopefully sharing my actions with the internet will help keep me motivated and focused.
The most important thing about this farming project is to try and be as sustainable as possible and use as few resources as possible. I will not use any synthetic or artificial pesticides or fertilizers, I will try to water it only as much as it needs and I will try to use water left over from other activities rather than straight from the hose (For example my sister has fish, and so when she does a water change, I will steal that water to water the plants. I'm also going to eventually set up rain barrels). I will also do my best to keep the soil healthy and plant cover grops when I'm not growing other types of food. Of the plants I will grow, I will make sure that they are less water reliant (I'm not going to grow corn, or any thirsty crop like that). This project is basically just trying to see if I can pull off relatively sustainable (sub)Urban farming and reduce energy usage and food waste.
